Meaning

ISO 15118 is the international standard for the communication protocol between an electric vehicle (EV) and the charging station (EVSE). It establishes a secure framework for the exchange of data, ensuring that the vehicle and the charger can identify each other and negotiate power requirements.

The most prominent feature of ISO 15118 is Plug & Charge, which enables a vehicle to automatically authenticate and authorise a charging session without the need for RFID cards or mobile apps. Beyond simplified access, the standard also provides the technical foundation for smart charging and bidirectional power transfer, such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), allowing for more sophisticated energy management between the EV and the national grid.
