Level 3 Charger
Meaning
“A Level 3 charger, widely referred to in the UK as a Rapid or Ultra-Rapid charger, is the fastest class of EV charging infrastructure. Unlike Level 2 units that provide AC power, a Level 3 station converts Alternating Current (AC) from the grid into Direct Current (DC) within the unit itself, bypassing the vehicle’s onboard converter to deliver energy directly to the battery.
These chargers typically start at power outputs of 50 kW (Rapid) and can reach 350 kW or higher (Ultra-Rapid), making them capable of recharging an EV to 80% in as little as 15 to 30 minutes. Due to their high power requirements and cost, they are primarily deployed at motorway service stations, commercial hubs, and fleet depots where minimal downtime is critical.”
