Megawatt Charging System (MCS)

Meaning

“The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is the global standard for high-power DC charging designed specifically for heavy-duty electric vehicles, including class 8 trucks, buses, and marine vessels. Officially standardised with the publication of IEC TS 63379 (February 2026) and SAE J3271, MCS enables power outputs far exceeding conventional CCS limits, with a theoretical maximum of 3.75 MW (3,000A at 1,250V).

By delivering over 1 MW of power, MCS allows large-capacity batteries to charge from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes, aligning perfectly with mandatory driver rest periods. This technology is the backbone of long-haul electrification, utilising advanced liquid-cooled connectors and the ISO 15118-20 protocol to ensure secure, rapid, and bidirectional energy transfer for large-scale fleet operations.”
