Residential Charger

Meaning

“A residential charger (often called a Home EV Charger or Wallbox) is a dedicated power supply unit installed at a private dwelling to recharge electric vehicles. In the UK, these are typically Mode 3 AC chargers with a power output of 7 kW, which provides a full charge overnight for most modern EVs—significantly faster and safer than a standard 3-pin domestic plug.

Under the latest UK Smart Charging Regulations (and the 2026 SSES updates), all residential chargers must feature “smart” functionality. This includes default off-peak scheduling to protect the National Grid, a randomised delay to prevent power surges, and advanced cybersecurity protection. As of April 2026, eligible renters and flat owners in the UK can access an increased OZEV grant of up to £500 towards the cost of purchase and installation, making home charging the most cost-effective and convenient way to power an electric vehicle.”
