Ultra Fast Charging
Meaning
“Ultra fast charging (officially classified in the UK as Ultra-Rapid Charging) refers to DC charging stations with a power output of 150 kW and above. These units are the fastest category in the UK’s public infrastructure, capable of recharging a compatible electric vehicle to 80% capacity in as little as 10 to 20 minutes.
Under the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 (active through 2026), ultra-rapid chargers are subject to strict performance standards, including a 99% network reliability mandate and the requirement for 24/7 staffed helpdesks. They are primarily deployed at motorway service areas, dedicated charging hubs, and logistics depots to support high-throughput needs and long-distance travel. Because they deliver energy directly to the battery at high voltage, they bypass the vehicle’s onboard converter, though the actual speed received is always regulated by the car’s Battery Management System (BMS).”
