What Is an Ultra Rapid EV Charger?

An ultra rapid EV charger is a high-power DC charging system designed to deliver energy quickly during relatively short vehicle stops.

In the UK, ultra-rapid charging is generally associated with DC chargers rated at 150kW and above. These systems are particularly relevant to public charging hubs, motorway locations and other sites where vehicles need to return to the road quickly.

The charger rating does not, however, guarantee that a vehicle will continuously charge at that power. Vehicle capability, battery state of charge, current limits and site conditions all affect the real charging rate.

Charging Speed

Rapid vs Ultra-Rapid EV Charging

Both use DC charging, but ultra-rapid chargers provide higher peak power for vehicles and sites that can make effective use of shorter charging windows.

50–149kW
Rapid DC Charging

Reliable Fast Charging for Longer Stops

Rapid charging can suit destinations and commercial locations where vehicles remain parked long enough that maximum charging speed is not the main operating priority.

150kW+
Ultra-Rapid DC Charging

Higher Power for Shorter Charging Sessions

Ultra-rapid charging is designed for locations where drivers need to recover more energy during shorter stops, making vehicle throughput increasingly important.

Applications

Where Ultra-Rapid Charging Makes Sense

Ultra-rapid chargers deliver the greatest value where short dwell times and high charging demand directly affect the performance of the site.

Motorway Charging

Help drivers recover useful range during journey breaks where charging time needs to fit naturally into a short motorway stop.

Public Charging Hubs

Serve a higher number of charging sessions throughout the day by reducing the time vehicles need to occupy individual charging bays.

High-Turnover Commercial Sites

Support commercial charging locations where shorter sessions, charger availability and customer throughput can affect site utilisation.

Power Selection

Which Ultra-Rapid Charging Power Is Right for Your Site?

Higher charger power can reduce charging time for compatible vehicles, but the right rating should reflect vehicle demand, site capacity and expected utilisation.

150kW+

Entry Ultra-Rapid Charging

Suitable for sites moving beyond conventional rapid charging where compatible vehicles can benefit from higher DC output.

300–320kW

High-Throughput Public Charging

Provides greater charging potential for modern EVs at busy commercial and public sites while retaining a flexible standalone charger format.

480kW

Maximum Standalone Power

Designed for high-demand charging hubs and future-ready sites serving vehicles capable of taking advantage of high-current DC charging.

Real Charging Performance

Why a 480kW Charger Does Not Always Deliver 480kW

The charger sets the available ceiling. The vehicle and site determine how much of that power can actually be used at a particular moment.

01

Vehicle DC Charging Limit

Every EV has its own maximum DC charging capability. A vehicle rated below the charger output will not automatically charge faster on a higher-power unit.

02

Battery State of Charge

Charging power typically changes throughout a session, with vehicles often reducing power as the battery reaches a higher state of charge.

03

Current & Battery Conditions

Cable current capability, battery temperature and vehicle battery management can all influence the real charging power achieved.

04

Available Site Power

Grid connection, transformer capacity and simultaneous charger use determine whether the site can support full output across multiple charging points.

Charging Hub Performance

Design for Throughput, Not Just Peak Power

For a public charging operator, a successful ultra-rapid site is not simply the location with the largest charger rating.

Vehicle turnover, bay utilisation, site electrical capacity and the mix of vehicles using the chargers all affect how effectively installed power is converted into real charging sessions.

Selecting the right combination of charger output and number of charging points can therefore be more important than maximising the rating of every individual charger.
